Do my Austrian friends still think anarchy and capitalism mix?

Perhaps we should let the NYPD go home and see what Order Emerges from this? A peaceful property respecting contract among all men one should suppose.

From what I’ve heard, whatever their stated ideology, these protestors have mostly respected property rights. Of course, that is in a context in which the NYPD waits eagerly to knock some heads. But surely Pinkertons could substitute in Rothbardistan!

If the NYPD went home for a day, I wouldn’t hire any private party to protect my property rights but this is not because the Austrians are wrong. It’s because I’d fear the NYPD violating my property rights the next day because the private security force was not licensed by the county or whatever.
If the NYPD could credibly commit to not enforce the laws that discourage people from hiring private parties to defend property rights, I’d immediately make arrangements to hire private security.

When cameras and signs are considered a credible threat to property rights, something has gone seriously wrong in our understanding of constitutional rights..
These aren’t a bunch of assault rifle and machete-bearing revolutionies ready to kill the doctors and teachers. They are kids with cameras, who have every right to peaceably assemble as any tourist group or lunch bunch on New York streets.

That’s the problem, isn’t it? Peaceable assembly can remain a right because it never threatens the powers that be.

That dismisses the good work of many successful and peaceful political movements.
If anything, the willingness to use violence to break up peaceful assembly shows everyone how afraid the “powers that be” really are. Only someone in a truly secure position can say, “We all have the right to an opinion, and they are free to speak as they see fit.”

Interesting point… but perhaps it’s just a side effect of my life experiences that I’ve never seen a peaceable assembly have that effect–despite having heard about them in history classes. I have a hard time seeing how they can possibly help without concrete action beyond the assembly.
But it would indicate just how important it is for OWS to paint any episodes of police brutality as the result of some banker-government machine, and for the NYPD to paint it as a few bad eggs.

Let me just add: is the Tea Party an example of this peaceble assembly having an effect? Because I’d think the rallies aren’t that important, but it’s what happens in the voting booth that is–and we’re then no longer talking about the assembly any more.

I love it when small protests are labeled “mob rule,” etc.
Improper scaling by the observer becomes the message.

The pinnacle of a pyramid always rests on top of the base. If that pinnacle forgets this simple fact we should feel no pity for their fall.

I was just flipping around the AM dial yesterday, and I’m really impressed at how quickly conservatives have managed to lose their taste for populist rallies…

Hasn’t anyone considered that the rich are simply less lean than the poor?
Seriously, the point of peaceful marches is so that the nation will be appalled and angry when they see the violent police reaction. Of course it’s always been difficult to gain the sympathy of the corporate media, which by and large misleads average Americans into thinking the protesters are punks and the forces of the establishment are in the right.

With respect, one doesn’t have to be an austro-libertarian to have views open to competing free market security agencies. There’s neo-classical free market anarchists out in the world, they just happen to be less noisy than the austrians.
Also, seeing as how those people are there because of the crash brought on by massive government intervention in markets and they are currently being abused by a government police force, I have trouble seeing how this would have anything to do with the type of societies that Rothbard, the Tannehills, or David Friedman talked about.
