The first computer is made by a human. That computer is programmed to design CPUs and is ‘taught’ (machine learning, or just programmed knowledge) everything everyone currently knows about electronics and CPUs. It then designs a super efficient, powerful CPU accordingly. If we could get that ultimate computer to identify and solve problems in the world, we would see progress ad infinitum.

The idea of robots designing robots and computers designing computers is amusing but betrays a single fatal flaw. The idea that a computer or robot can design something more complicated than itself intentionally seems flawed.

The only argument I have ever seen of a computer program designing something more complicated than itself is a computer forever generating programs at random and running all of them forever. However, this can hardly be called designing.
