kcbrady,

My point was -or at least was trying to be- exactly that: more years of college does not mean we are increasing human capital, i.e. learning.

Agustin,

I don't really have a particular prescription for what we need more of, just better matching of education required job skills. In the short run, people appear to be getting four year degrees they don't need. In the long run, overall 4 year college attendance going up may be a good thing if can improve the bottom rung or see that marginal enrollment goes into higher quality institutions.

I agree. I think it would be useful to clarify the statement being debated.

Is it 4-year post-secondary versus 2-year? University vs. trade school? Any post-secondary vs. none?

Or is it more subtle, like 40% should go to university vs. 80% should? Or is it based on some set of criteria like family income, etc.?

What are we talking about?

hmmm ... I wouldn't get college and education confused, and I think you might also try not to confuse learning with education.

A learning society is a very good idea. An educated one ... well, we're considered a pretty educated society right now. After all, large numbers of educated people believe in astrology and other irrational things ...
